Chapter 14

Elle stared at the back of the closed door for a good sixty seconds, trying to figure out what exactly just happened. Why the hell did he get so pissed off all of a sudden? One moment, he was comforting her, and the very next, he dropped her like she had the plague and stormed out of the door bellowing something about her “bleedin’ blue jean trews.”

“Crazy-assed control freak.” Elle wiped her tear-stained face and made a conscious attempt to convince herself that she didn’t care what Conall Cameron thought or did. In actuality, she did care what he thought. She was starting to care very much.

This man, who butted heads with her like a ram, had actually succeeded in making her think about things that she never considered about herself. When she was young, she would read stories of knights in shining armor rescuing princesses where the strong warrior would save the princess, ultimately making her feel protected, cared for, safe, and loved. She believed that such men only existed in fairy tales and she was—sure as shit—no princess. Except for her own brother’s sibling affection, she never knew what it felt like to have someone care so deeply about what she did or said, nor did she have somebody care enough to want to keep her safe before. If somebody would have asked her if she wanted to date a guy who was like that, she would have laughed in their face. What a ridiculous thought. Who in their right mind would want somebody to answer to?

Her martial art classes helped her become more confident about herself. They actually helped her to cope with her anger and feelings of insufficiency by developing a healthy self-defense system to protect herself. The mantras were still screaming in her head. Never give up, make the first strike, learn to know your enemies, never put anybody on a pedestal above yourself, and never let your guard down, were only a few of the rules she had come to live by. And Conall was forcing her to disregard all of them.

On the other hand, Con had succeeded in making her feel appreciated. Thinking of it, there wasn’t a man she knew who had ever made her feel so cherished, or one that saw to her comfort, even if it was because he felt so responsible for her. Con also laughed at her stupid jokes and puns, even when she knew he probably didn’t understand the American humor.

The sounds of children’s laughter broke into her thoughts, and Elle walked over to the bedroom window that peered out into the bailey yard, to see what all the ruckus was about. A grin spread across her face when she spied the source of the fun.

There, in the midst of the gathering, were about a dozen screaming and yelling—and very muddy—children of various ages, along with Conall Cameron.
